Initially you will have a chat to your osteopath about your reason for seeking treatment and about your general health and past medical history. The osteopath integrates all this information to get a sense of who you are and what could potentially be the reason for your problem.
This is followed by a physical examination for which you might be required to remove outer garments. Removing clothes is not absolutely necessary but it usually helps to generate a better picture of the issues. Skin temperature and color, sweating or changes in texture of the skin are important clues which are missed if clothes are worn. For that reason it is a good idea to bring a pair of shorts and a singlet to the treatments. If you are completely uncomfortable with the idea of removing outer layers, we can work around it of course. Osteopaths use a highly developed sense of touch called palpation in order to assess areas of weakness, tension, tenderness and restriction of movement. Physical examination might also include taking your blood pressure or listening to your heart or lungs.
After taking a case history and performing a physical examination, the osteopath will discuss the findings with you and suggest a course of treatment. The osteopath will give you an indication of the number of treatments required and also might prescribe some home exercise or stretching.
If necessary you will be referred to your GP for further tests or for x-rays.
